England coach Roy Hodgson is allowing wives and girlfriends (WAGs) to join the 23-man squad at their base camp in Manaus, but the Liverpool star feels having the WAG's alongside can be a "bit of a distraction".

England captain Gerrard instead wants his family to stay put in Liverpool while he attempts to bring home the World Cup. In the previous edition of the quadrennial event in 2010 too Gerrard had not taken his wife along to South Africa.

'Focus on form'
"I thought it was bit of a distraction, so in 2010 when I set off for the World Cup in South Africa, I preferred for my family to be away from me and I could focus on trying to get my form right. I will be doing the same again in Brazil," Gerrard told BBC Radio 2.

While the 33-year-old admitted it will be tough to stay away from his pretty wife and three daughters - Lilly-Ella (10), Lexie (8) and Lourdes (3) - for the eight-week period between May and and July, he hoped it would help him reap the rewards of World Cup glory.

"Usually the day you get to see them is a day after a game - and that is when you are at your most tired. The last thing I want to be doing is getting dragged here, there and everywhere by three young girls - which is not their fault, but I have to sacrifice that side of it for hopefully six weeks or eight weeks and hopefully get the rewards," he added.

Gerrard said he would stay in touch with his girls on the Internet. "That's enough for me in that short space time. I felt that helped me in 2010 and hopefully it will be the same in Brazil," added Gerrard, whose Liverpool are in contention for the Premiership title after their 6-3 away win at Cardiff City on Saturday took them to second place, behind Chelsea.
