London: Returning captain Wayne Rooney complemented Anthony Martial’s 10 million euro strike as Manchester United secured a much-needed victory at Burnley, moving Jose Mourinho’s men within a point of Manchester City ahead of this week's derby.
The result moves Mourinho’s Reds within a point of fourth-placed City ahead of Thursday’s mouth-watering derby clash at Etihad Stadium.
Martial, whose 25th goal for United earned a windfall for former club Monaco, was criticised by Mourinho last week but responded impressively at Turf Moor, where his shot led Rooney to net on just his second league start of 2017.
The Frenchman held off the midfielder's advances and played the ball to Ander Herrera. Martial continued his run and met a fine first-time ball with a deft touch and finish past Heaton.
While for captain Rooney it was his first goal since January and allowed his team to take their foot off the gas in the second half, comfortably extending their unbeaten league run to a 23rd match.
