As English Premier League clubs splash record cash during the summer transfer window, we look at five gainers and losers

Romelu Lukaku & Man United
Everton's Romelu Lukaku was considering a move to Chelsea after his goal-scoring exploits last season. Jose Mourinho and Man United saw an opening and seized the opportunity. Mourinho needed a replacement for injured striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Portuguese surprised everyone by signing the Belgium international for £75m before Chelsea made their move. United have made a perfect start to the Premier League campaign and look good to go the distance. That surely will please Lukaku.
Danny Drinkwater
Drinkwater was the only want-away star to get his move on deadline day as Chelsea finally agreed to pay Leicester £35million to sign the midfielder. Drinkwater will join former Fox N'Golo Kante in the champions' midfield.
Jurgen Klopp & Liverpool
Snatching Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Chelsea will give Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a psychological boost but just as important was holding on to their star Philippe Coutinho. Barcelona may yet make a final push for Coutinho, but assuming the moment has passed, the Reds have enjoyed a strong finish.
Paul Clement & Swansea
The success of Swansea's transfer window is debatable but they pulled off the deal of the day with the capture of Renato Sanches on loan from Bayern Munich. Sanches is rated as one of the most talented young midfielders in Europe and that he chose the Liberty Stadium was a real coup for Paul Clement and his struggling side.
Mauricio Pochettino & Tottenham
Tottenham and manager Mauricio Pochettino prised Fernando Llorente from rivals Chelsea means they secured quality cover for Harry Kane and gained some measure of revenge too for the targets lost to the Blues. Right-back Serge Aurier, who signed for £23million from PSG could also prove a bargain.
Misses
Alexis Sanchez
Sanchez kept everyone guessing with some mysterious dabbles on social media but it was the Chilean who ended up in limbo as Arsenal decided to block his move to Manchester City. Arsenal failed to secure a suitable replacement after running out of time to secure a deal for Thomas Lemar on deadline day meaning Sanchez was denied his wish of again linking up with Pep Guardiola at City.
Ross Barkley
Barkley's future has been in question for the best part of 18 months now and Ronald Koeman had all but conceded the midfielder's best option would be to leave Goodison Park. It made Barkley's last minute decision to reject Chelsea all the more baffling. He may prefer a move to Tottenham but there is no guarantee Spurs will be interested again in January while Barkley now has to endure another four months at least of uncertainty.
Virgil van Dijk
Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk wanted a move to Liverpool during the summer. Clubs like Chelsea and Man City were in the hunt too, but Van Dijk preferred a move to Anfield. The Dutchman had made it clear that he is not prepared to see his chance of playing in the Champions League pass him by. But Southampton played the waiting game and denied Van Dijk a move to one of the elite clubs.
Antonio Conte & Chelsea
Scrambling for deals late in the transfer window is rarely a sign of champions but even stranger was that Chelsea and manager Conte lost out on the targets they went for. After surrendering Romelu Lukaku to Man United, there was more disappointment on Thursday as Oxlade-Chamberlain picked Liverpool, Spurs snuck in to sign Llorente before Ross Barkley dealt one final blow by opting to stay at Everton.
Rafa Benitez & Newcastle United
Few had expected a splurge from Newcastle but that will be of little consolation to Rafael Benitez, who had already expressed dismay at his club's lack of ambition. The Magpies made no additions on the final day, leaving Benitez short in several positions he reportedly asked to strengthen. It promises to be another long season on Tyneside.
