Mumbai’s rich cricketing history permeates the atmosphere every time a competitive match is played at its many maidans and gymkhanas. Such is the city's unmatched fervour and talent for the sport that there was a time when cricketers from Mumbai made up almost half of the playing eleven of the Indian national team.

Mid-day’s Mumbai Cricket Podcast, hosted by Group Sports Editor Clayton Murzello, brings out stories of those who played in the great eras of Mumbai cricket. The guests are of contemporary importance through their continued association with Mumbai cricket in their post-playing days.

The conversations lead to rare and colourful revelations. For instance, did you know that Sachin Tendulkar used to play cricket near the toilets of dressing rooms? Or that a Mumbai cricketer was once threatened by the wife of a batsman to whom he had been bowling bouncers?

Host Clayton Murzello first began reporting on local cricket in 1988. He joined Mid-day as a full-time journalist in 1994. He is the recipient of two Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) awards for excellence in sports writing. While following Mumbai cricket closely, he has also covered multiple tours to Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe throughout his career.

The first episode of the new podcast features former international cricketer Salil Ankola, who had made his debut in the same Test as Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis during the 1989-90 India vs Pakistan series.

Guests in future episodes include cricketers such as Amol Muzumdar and Raju Kulkarni, among others. Some have been coaches, some have been selectors and some continue to follow the fortunes of Mumbai cricket from afar.
