Five-time Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians retained skipper Rohit Sharma, pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Kieron Pollard and gun batsman Suryakumar Yadav for next year’s edition of the multi-million dollar franchise tournament on Tuesday.

A maximum of four players [up to three Indians, up to two overseas and/or up to two uncapped Indians] could be retained by the existing teams ahead of the mega auction where two new IPL teams will enter the league in 2022. The deadline for the retention of players ended on Tuesday. Rohit was retained for Rs 16 crore, Bumrah’s for Rs 12 crore, Suryakumar cost the franchise Rs 8 crore and Pollard for Rs 6 crore. MI will enter the auction with a purse of Rs 48 crore. Commenting on MI’s retentions, Rohit said: “It was going to be the toughest retention for Mumbai this year. We’ve had absolute gun players and to release them is heartbreaking. They’ve done some amazing work and created memories for this franchise, but we’ve got four players including myself, who can hopefully form a good core.”

Meanwhile, RCB retained Virat Kohli (Rs 15 crore), Glenn Maxwell (Rs 11 crore) and Mohd Siraj (Rs 7 crore).

Chennai Super Kings retained Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 16 cr) MS Dhoni (Rs 12 cr) and Moeen Ali (Rs 8 cr) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 6 cr).

Punjab Kings kept Mayank Agarwal (Rs 14 cr) and spinner Arshdeep Singh (Rs 4 cr). PBKS head coach Anil Kumble said that the team were keen on retaining KL Rahul, but he was not interested in staying. “We wanted to retain Rahul, but he decided to go into the auction. We respect that, we honour that decision. It’s the player’s prerogative,” he said.

Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Kane Williamson (Rs 14cr), Umran Malik (Rs 4cr) and Abdul Samad (Rs 4cr).

Kolkata Knight Riders retained Sunil Narine (Rs 6cr), Andre Russell (Rs 12cr), Varun Chakravarthy (Rs 8cr) and Venkatesh Iyer (Rs 8cr).
