Disability cricket is close to realising its dream of being under the BCCI’s wings after physically challenged, deaf, blind and wheelchair cricket bodies came under one umbrella as directed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) was formed on Monday under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act. Mahantesh GK will head the umbrella body.

Common body
Mahantesh, who represents Cricket Association for the Blind in India, Ravi Chauhan, representing Physically Challenged Cricket Association of India, Abhai Pratap Singh (Wheelchair Cricket India Association) and Sumit Jain (Indian Deaf Cricket Association) decided to come together to form a common body for disability cricket.
Giving a platform for disability cricket in India was one of the provisions under the Justice Lodha Committee reforms. With so many different organisations working towards various disability cricket in India, the BCCI suggested to form an umbrella that will enable them to take forward their cricket.

“We have formed the umbrella body as per the instructions received from the BCCI. We are very thankful to BCCI secretary Jay Shah for guiding us and encouraging differently-abled cricket in India. He has always patiently heard our problems and has been very supportive in providing an official platform for differently-abled cricketers. We are hopeful that the BCCI will very soon take disability cricket under its wings. BCCI’s support will provide a stable and bright future for thousands of talented disability cricketers. It will be a dream to have an Indian team for the physically challenged, blind, deaf and wheel chair cricketers,” DCCI general secretary Chauhan told mid-day on Friday. Mahantesh also welcomed BCCI’s support. “With BCCI’s support, it can boost the cricket movement for the disabled in the country,” he said.
