Underestimated yet determined South Africa and Sri Lanka’s World Cup quest begins today as they face each other in New Delhi; islanders need to shrug off Asia Cup final blues

Many would consider South Africa and Sri Lanka, who clash at the renovated Kotla here today, are here to complete the numbers. That is far from the truth. Although Sri Lanka are a pale shadow of the legendary team that won the 1996 World Cup, the young team have it in them to leave a mark on the tournament. As for South Africa, they would like to get rid of the “chokers” tag this time.

Big task
The Big Five—India, England, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan are considered top title aspirants, but South Africa and Sri Lanka cannot be brushed aside. Without a doubt, they have a Herculean task ahead, but they surely will be targeting a semi-final berth.
Today’s match is the first of the many tests these two teams will be facing in their bid to stand tall enough among the titans. Only time will tell if they will be able to make it memorable for their fans back home. But the first step for them is to start their campaign on a winning note.

SA’s talented squad
Many consider South Africa the dark horses. They have a talented set of players, and if they play as a unit and to potential, they have it in them to cause a few upsets and maybe get into the semi-finals.
In a similar manner, Sri Lanka would be keen to prove that their disastrous performance in the Asia Cup final was just a blip and would be eager to begin in a
convincing way so as to set the tone for future matches. Much of their chances will depend on out-of-form skipper Dasun Shanaka. He will have to lead by example and motivate his team in the absence of top-class spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.
The match may be a low-key affair, but both teams realise it is very important to make a winning start so that other teams do not take them lightly.
