Elite E group ties in doubt after rise of COVID-19 cases in Kerala

Prithvi Shaw

With Kerala logging over 22,000 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the BCCI has been forced to rethink their decision to conduct the Elite E group Ranji Trophy matches at Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala was one of the nine venues that was shortlisted by the BCCI to conduct the premier first-class tournament, which will be played in two phases this time.

BCCI to shift venue?

It is understood that the BCCI officials are contemplating shifting the matches out of Thiruvananthapuram after carefully understanding the risks involved. Andhra Pradesh, Services, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand are scheduled to play in the picturesque state. There are over 40,000 active COVID cases in Thiruvananthapuram at the moment.

The teams will be reporting to their respective venues by February 10. First of the three league games is likely to begin from February 17.

Prithvi to lead Mumbai

Meanwhile, domestic giants Mumbai are likely to appoint Prithvi Shaw as their skipper despite the availability of senior player Ajinkya Rahane. It is learnt that Prithvi’s appointment has been done looking at the long-term perspective. Rahane, the former India Test vice-captain, will mentor the team.
