Due to lockdown, Shreyas Iyer keen to train in UK

Injury may have prevented Shreyas Iyer from playing for Lancashire in the 50-overs Royal London Cup, but India’s limited-overs batsman has written to his English county team if he can travel there to complete his rehab and recovery programme.

It is learnt that Iyer wrote an email recently to Lancashire CC to check whether he will be permitted to train there. A reply is awaited.

Lockdown, a hindrance

mid-day has learnt that Iyer wrote to Lancashire because the prevailing lockdown-like restrictions in Maharashtra and other Indian states are a hindrance to his recovery process.

The premier Mumbai batsman picked up an injury on his left shoulder while fielding in the first ODI against England at Pune.

He then went under the knife on April 8 at a Mumbai hospital, a day before the Indian Premier League.

Iyer first injured his left shoulder during Delhi Capitals’ match against Rajasthan Royals at Dubai in 2020.

If the Lancashire arrangement does not work out, the other option for Iyer would be to head to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore to continue his rehab.

Sweating it out

On May 13, he posted an Instagram video of his workout session and captioned it: “Work in progress, watch this space.”

Last Saturday, he posted a video of him running uphill in an “isolated” place.

Iyer, an avid reader, has his books for company. He is currently reading Linwood Barclay’s suspense thriller, Trust Your Eyes. It is understood that Iyer is aiming to recover before the estimated five-month period suggested by the experts.
