Debu Mitra, who was coach of Saurashtra from 2004 to 2014, has hailed the elevation of Ravindra Jadeja to the Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy and reckons Jadeja will not fall short when it comes to displaying leadership qualities. “I did not anticipate Dhoni’s decision to quit as captain, but now that it has happened, the move to appoint Jaddu skipper looks a great one."

“He will not let the franchise down as he has a very fertile cricket brain,” Mitra told mid-day on Friday. “He is supreme athlete, best all-rounder in the world and a fast-improving batsman. He is also the best fielder in the world and captaincy will motivate him further,” added Mitra.

The veteran coach recalled how Jadeja who slugged it out when India were beaten by New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals. It was a tournament in which Mitra along with Dilip Doshi, the former India, Bengal and Saurashtra spinner advocated for Jadeja to be a constant in India’s playing XI. The perky all-rounder was initially kept out of the playing XI.
