Having regained her confidence with runs in the previous game, India opener Shafali Verma is relishing the prospect of facing the South African pacers in their must-win Women’s World Cup match on Sunday.

The teenager has not been in the best of form in the ongoing tournament and was dropped from the playing XI before being called back for the game against Australia.

With three wins and as many losses India, who are in the fifth spot with six points in the overall standings.

“I’m always ready for any sort of situation whether I was not in the squad. When I was included against Australia, I was ready for it as I always thought that I may be given a chance on any given day,” Verma said at a pre-match press conference.

Coaches backing

“Coaches were backing me when I was in nets. Our batting coach [SS Das] always gave me confidence which is a very good thing. He always worked on my weak and strong points.”

“Our staff goes to those players who are not in good nick. They sit with them and give them confidence. As a player it gives us a boost.

“They always make sure to speak to the out-of-form players and try to boost their confidence, which is a good thing. As a player, you derive a lot of confidence through such interactions.”
Meanwhile, Suzie Bates compiled her 12th ODI century and became the first New Zealand batter, and fourth overall, to reach 5,000 runs in the format as the hosts beat Pakistan by 71 runs to end an otherwise disappointing Women’s World Cup campaign on a positive note on Saturday.

Suzie Bates smashes ton

After Bates’s magnificent century guided New Zealand to 265 for eight, a maiden five-wicket haul from medium pacer Hannah Rowe helped New Zealand register a comfortable victory at the Hagley Oval.

Bates hit 126 from just 135 deliveries in the White Ferns’ total and that proved too much for Pakistan as Rowe picked up 5-55 to effectively seal the result for New Zealand.
