Arjun Tendulkar, the son of cricket legend Sachin, has said that his selection in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team is a dream-come-true moment for him.

All-rounder Arjun was named in the Ranji Trophy squad led by Test player Prithvi Shaw.

The senior selection committee comprises Salil Ankola (Chairman), Ghulam Parkar, Sunil More, Prasad Desai and Anand Yalvigi Arjun is in the squad for two games -  against Maharashtra (January 13-16) and Delhi from January 20 to 23.

“It is an honour to be selected to represent Mumbai in the prestigious Ranji Trophy. It is a dream come true for me. I am eagerly looking forward to giving my best for the team,” said Arjun.

For lovers of nostalgia, it can be recalled that Sachin made his Ranji debut for Mumbai against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium on December 10, 1988. The following day, Sachin scored his first-class debut hundred before skipper Lalchand Rajput declared the Mumbai innings closed at 394-6 in response to Gujarat’s 140 all out. The visitors fared better in the second innings by totalling 306 with  Bharat Mistry scoring a hundred. The three-day match ended in a draw.

“He [Sachin] walked in and was hemmed in by close-in fielders. Till now it was always the under-15, 17 and 19. His first ball was defended on the front foot. But the next was beautifully placed at mid-wicket. A la Dilip Vengsarkar for four, the next was defended. Then once again Sachin stepped out and placed the ball between mid-off and extra-cover for another sizzling boundary,” wrote Milind Rege in Sportsweek magazine.

Rege, a former Mumbai captain, was watching as a selector.

Sachin’s innings was also witnessed by stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar, Eknath Solkar, Ramakant Desai, Sudhir Naik and coach-mentor Vasu Paranjape.
