World champion Therese Alshammar faces losing the new world record she set in the 50 metres butterfly in Australia as she was wearing two swimsuits, a practice just outlawed by governing body FINA.
The Swede lowered her own record to 25.44 seconds at the World Championship trials but was subsequently found to be wearing two suits. This contravenes new rules introduced by FINA at their Dubai Bureau meeting following concern over the advantages offered by certain swimwear and the wearing of multiple suits.
The swimmer initially protested the decision but withdrew her appeal after receiving clarification on the new rules from officials.
