South Africa were 76 for one at the time of going to press, with Graeme Smith unbeaten on 34 and Hashim Amla 40 not out, in reply to England's first innings total of 385 all out on the second day of the first Test at the Oval yesterday.
Earlier, James Anderson dismissed Alviro Petersen for a duck. Anderson produced a superb delivery in the third over of South Africa's innings, swinging the ball in and striking Petersen on the back pad.
