Lad, who resumed on the overnight score of 94, got to his maiden hundred with a delightful flick off Vinay Kumar. He admitted to feeling nervous before the start of play. “I spoke to Wasimbhai (Jaffer) last evening and he just told me to remain positive because I had been out in the 90s a couple of times before,” said Lad.

“The intent was to remain  positive. Getting your first hundred is always a very special feeling.” Lad was well supported by Patil, who coming in at No 7, bailed the team out after losing five early wickets. The duo stitched together a crucial sixth wicket partnership of 190 off 272 balls.

Patil endured a disastrous Ranji debut two seasons ago, falling for a duck but the 25-year-old was determined to make this innings count.

Patil scored 106 off 172 balls with 13 boundaries and two sixes before dedicating his century to his departed coach, Vithal Patil. “I would also like to thank Sanjay Gaitonde who has seen me right from my under-14 days and helped me throughout my career. Vinayak Mane has also been working hard on me,” Patil said.
