The 32-year-old suffered a bullet wound in the attack as gunmen rained bullets on the Sri Lanka team bus travelling to the Gadaffi Stadium for the third day of the second Test.
He was the worst hit of seven players injured and was taken to a private hospital in Colombo after arriving back in Sri Lanka this morning.
Geethanjana Mendis, director general of the Sports Ministry medical unit said: "The boys are all suffering from trauma. But they should all be okay and can get back to cricket in a week to 10 days.
"Samaraweera, however, will need further surgery and treatment and he will need more time to recover."
