Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Sharad Pawar is banking on the re-introduced Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) to pull Mumbai cricket out of the abyss it finds itself in.

“The Mumbai team’s performance across all age groups has been a serious concern for us. Hence, we have decided to get back the CIC and hope that cricketers like Madhav Apte, Ajit Wadekar, Ajit Agarkar, Milind Rege and other experienced cricketers help us with their services,” said Pawar during the MCA Annual General Meeting yesterday.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar slammed MCA: “Mumbai cricket has gone back by 10 years in the last three years. It will take some time to get it back on track. They (MCA) are not interested in cricket. I hope the CIC helps in the revival.”

All-time low: Rajput
Meanwhile, former Mumbai captain and India player Lalchand Rajput said that Mumbai’s performance cannot fall any further. “I think Mumbai’s cricket is at an all-time low, but it cannot fall any further. It’s time to rise and get back the legacy. It’s not that we don’t have talent. The nurturing of players, tapping talent and giving them opportunities is a cause for concern,” Rajput told mid-day.

Abey keeps the faith
Former India pacer Abey Kuruvilla said that the team needs some time. “Only one team can win. We should take losing as a part of sport. Our team is still the most talented with a lot of youngsters in it. It’s just that they are not performing. Yes, we need to work on the bench strength. If we give them time and confidence, they will perform,” said Kuruvilla.
