Meanwhile, Venus Williams gave the Americas an early lead in the final of yesterday before Russia's Vera Zvonareva won her match to level the best-of-five tie.
Williams beat Anna Chakvetadze 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, while Zvonareva beat Gisela Dulko 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
