Kanpur loves Sunny

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar may be revered all around the globe for his cricketing achievements, but the people ofu00a0 Kanpur love and respect him for a special reason.

The original Little Master's wife Marshneil (Pammi to friends) hails from the Leather City. And ever since their courtship started after they first met on the sidelines of a Test match here in 1973, the residents of Kanpur consider him to be one of their own.

Crowe's security call
One striking feature during most international cricket matches in smaller Indian cities is the presence of non-media personnel in the press box. Even as scribes are observing the proceedings carefully, there comes a nudge from some VIP's bhatija or some official's bhai.

This time round though, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association have done well to keep such 'important' spectators away from the media centre. However, just a little hiccup in the security check yesterday attracted the wrath of match referee Jeff Crowe.

Two school kids, who had occupied a bench in the media box for a while were promptly asked to vacate at Crowe's behest.

Scorer's little gem
Scorers at cricket grounds are a unique breed. And one of their commonalities is their insistence on making announcements (bowling change, fall of wicket etc) in English even though they are not fluent in the language.
As a result, no matter how hard you try to ignore them, they come up with some gems.

At the Green Park press box yesterday, the scorer came up with one such classic as he announced Zaheer Khan's dismissal. "Attention please, the ninth Indian wicket has fallen in the shape of Zaheer Khan." The entire press box was in splits.
