Wellington: Kane Williamson, who top-scored for New Zealand, as the hosts were bundled out for a modest 192, on the opening day of the second Test against India at the Basin Reserve, believes India made best use of the conditions that was available to them.

“They bowled very well. They sort of picked up from where they left off in Auckland (in the first Test). Credit goes to their bowling attack,” Williamson, who scored 47, said.

“It seamed around a bit and they got the ball to swing nicely and they bowled very well, so it was definitely a good challenge batting first on it and it was nice to scrape together a scrappy total,” he added.

Elaborating on the pitch, Williamson said: “Looking at the pitch, we expected it to be tough. We played on a green one here before against the West Indies (in December), but they did not bowl as well as this Indian side.

“They bowled very short. It is hard to compare but yes, it was tough out there and the nature of the surface, the quality of bowling was much tougher. It was a good challenge for our batting unit and we will have to try and apply that same pressure with the ball.”

Talking about the toss, which his captain Brendon McCullum lost for the seventh time on the tour, he said, “That would have been a nice toss to win. But it’s been uncanny, not one toss the whole series is just ridiculous.”
