Johannesburg's The Wanderers Stadium continues to be a happy hunting ground for India after the visitors beat South Africa by 28 runs on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. So far, India are unbeaten in Tests at The Wanderers, winning two of the five matches played against South Africa, while three were drawn. No Indian side, since the first tour to South Africa in 1992, had won a Test until 2006 when pacer S Sreesanth's eight-wicket haul in the match and VVS Laxman's 73 in the second innings helped Rahul Dravid's men win the game by 123 runs. India couldn't carry on the momentum in the remaining two matches and lost the three-match series 1-2 against South Africa.
It all started at J'burg
Not only in Tests, but The Wanderers has been a special place for India in T20Is as well. India made their debut in the 20-over format at this ground beating South Africa by six wickets in 2006. Sourav Ganguly & Co did not have a World Cup final to remember at this venue after losing to Australia by 125 runs in 2003, but MS Dhoni's men shrugged off that disappointment beating arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs to lift their maiden World Twenty20 trophy in 2007. In ODIs, India have won three out of the nine matches played. Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra helped India register a huge 183-run victory over Sri Lanka in the Super Six stage of the 2003 World Cup.
Famous 2009 Champions Trophy win
India enjoyed a repeat of the 2003 performance as they bowled out West Indies for just 129 to win a 2009 Champions Trophy league match by seven wickets. In the next game at Jo-burg in 2011, pacer Munaf Patel's 4-29 in eight overs helped the visitors win a thrilling one-dayer against South Africa by one run.
