IND v SL: Ajinkya Rahane flops again as the Mumbai batsman's woes persist

Runs continued to elude Ajinkya Rahane as the Indian vice-captain suffered another failure, stumped for just one, here at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Saturday. So far in the series, Rahane has managed just seven runs in four innings. But more than the bare runs column, batting coach Sanjay Bangar reckoned that Rahane would be gutted with his shot selection that led to his downfall, here in Delhi and Nagpur. On both occasions he came in to bat with India in a dominant position and failed to cash in. "I think that would be hurting him definitely, but he is a quality player," Bangar said. "Yeah, he would be disappointed. He will be hurting with the kind of dismissals he has had but he is too good a player to not score runs for a long time."

Rahane has been grappling for form for more than a year, managing just a solitary hundred and three fifties in his last 13 Tests. Furthermore, the Mumbai batsman has squandered frequent starts, elucidated by 11 double digit dismissals (under 50) in his last 22 innings. However, Bangar felt that Rahane's proven overseas record will hold him in good stead, with a string of tours looming, and he expected the right-hander to bounce back sooner rather than later. "He is one of the few players who has scored in every overseas country we have toured. That shows the quality he possesses. He is a quality player who has always performed when the chips are down for the team. He is a quality player and has the ability to bounce back quickly," said Bangar. Curiously, Rahane averages over 53 abroad, but only a tad over 34 at home.
