Mumbai: Team India’s former right-handed batsman Mohammad Kaif, who has contested the Lok Sabha polls from Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh on a Congress ticket, says he is as nervous on the eve of vote counting, as he was during his Test debut, (Bangalore) versus South Africa in 2000.

Speaking from Allahabad, the 34-year-old said yesterday, “Obviously, I am nervous. As nervous as I was when Sachin Tendulkar (then captain) gave me the news about my inclusion in the Test.”

“I have reached my constituency (Phulpur). I will wake up at five in the morning and go to the venue for vote counting,” he added.

“I have received several calls from my friends who have wished me victory. A few cricket fans also supported my decision to contest the elections.”

Kaif is aware of the Modi wave, but he said, “We are fighters and will fight till the end.” He refused to divulge his celebration plans if he wins. The cricketer’s stint with Team India ended in 2006, after 13 Tests and 125 ODIs.
