Robin is amongst the 57 who applied for the post after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to invite applications through an advertisement on their website.

“I have the experience and also fit into the necessary criteria laid down by the Indian cricket board. I believe I have the credentials for the post and that is why I applied for it,” Robin told mid-day yesterday.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Robin captained the U-19 team in his country of birth before leaving Caribbean shores for Chennai in 1984. He made his India ODI debut against the West Indies team in 1989. Since retirement from international cricket, Robin shifted his focus to coaching.

After coaching the India
U-19 team, he went on to coach Hong Kong. He was also the India ‘A’ coach before being named the fielding coach of the Indian cricket team in 2007. Robin and former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad (India’s bowling coach) formed a formidable partnership. However, they were unceremoniously dumped from the national set-up in 2009.

Robin has since coached the batting unit of the Mumbai Indians and is also a part of the T20 leagues in Bangladesh and Caribbean. “I want to get involved with the Indian cricket team in any capacity,” said Robin.
