Hat-trick of marriages? Imran Khan refutes, but Twitterati still celebrate

Cricket legend-turned-politician Imran Khan has allegedly married a third time in a simple ceremony few days back in London. That's what Pakistani media is reporting.

But the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman on Tuesday took to Twitter to refute these reports regarding his marriage with a woman belonging to the Pakpattan-based Maneka family.

According to reports in Pakistani news sites, the name of Khan’s purported bride is Maryam, who is sister of Bushra, who is the wife of customs officer Khawar Farid Maneka. Interestingly, Bushra is said to be Imran Khan’s ‘spiritual guide'.

The 63-year-old has termed all these reports as “baseless”.

PTI Information Secretary Naeemul Haq also took to Twitter to rubbish the reports. He posted that rumours of Imran Khan getting married are totally wrong. He went on to say that the leader was in London and spending time with his children.

Interestingly, the news of Imran’s second marriage -- with Reham Khan -- was initially just a speculation but was later confirmed by Imran.

According to some reports, the decision to get married is based on advice from his spiritual guide 'Bushra', who has allegedly told the cricketer-turned-politician that he cannot become Prime Minister if he remains unmarried.

In a message posted on Twitter, former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar claimed that he knew about the wedding two months back since Imran himself had told him that he was about to get married again. However, he added that he didn’t know who the girl was.

Shoaib's tweet came a couple of hours after Imran denied the rumours. The pacer later deleted his tweet.

Rumours about Imran’s marriage surfaced after an interview he gave in which he said he was "open" to the idea of a third marriage.

The former cricketer's first wife was British journalist and activist Jemima Goldsmith. The duo were married for nine years and divorced in 2004. They have two sons who live in the UK with their mother.

His second marriage took place with London-based former BBC anchor Reham Khan in January 2015, but they divorced after just 10 months.

Twitterati had fun with the rumour:
