Micheal Clarke (168) was elegant again while North made sure of the No.6 spot with an unbeaten 112 as they notched through a 253-run partnership.
Clarke's clinical innings, a 14th test century for the Australian vice-captain, spanned 364 minutes, 253 deliveries and included 22 fours and two sixes.
After Australia declared on 459-5, the Kiwi batsmen struggled ultimately putting enormous pressure on captain Vettori (42 not out) and Guptill (19 not out) who survived till the end of the day.
Doug Bollinger struck in the first over of New Zealand's reply and they were 43 for 4 when the left-armer removed Ross Taylor, the side's key batsman.
