Skipper Shikhar Dhawan led from the front with an unbeaten 86 as India comfortably chased Sri Lanka’s total of 262-9 with seven wickets and 80 balls to spare to win the first ODI at the Premadasa Stadium here on Sunday.

A patient Dhawan hit six fours and one six for his 95-ball knock. Opening partner Prithivi Shaw slammed a 24-ball 43 for the Man of the Match award. Birthday boy and debutant Ishan Kishan, 23, was the second-highest scorer for India with a 42-ball 59 (8x4, 2x6). Earlier, the Lankans won the toss and opted to bat. Chamika Karunaratne did well to score quickly towards the end of the innings and top-scored for the hosts with a 35-ball 43 not out.

For India, pacer Deepak Chahar, spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, took two wickets each. In more good news from the India camp, Hardik Pandya returned to bowling duty for the national team, having recovered from a back injury and subsequent surgery. He bowled five overs and picked up one wicket, giving away 34 runs.
