The US Navy aircraft carrier strike group that for months has launched crucial strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen will remain in the region for at least another month, according to US officials. The joint British-US airstrikes that targeted Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday, killed at least 16 people and wounded 42 others, amounting to the highest publicly acknowledged death toll, since the beginning of the attacks.

The US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin signed the order last week to extend the four ships’ deployment for a second time, rather than bringing the carrier, the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, and its three warships home. A normal ship deployment lasts about seven months, whereas these ships have been on the waters since last October.

Altogether there are around 6,000 sailors, including a cruiser, two destroyers, the USS Gravely and the USS Mason.. In retaliation, the Houthis held their stand for Israel, and criticised both countries on X. “We confirm this brutal aggression against Yemen as punishment for its position in support of Gaza, in support of Israel to continue its crimes of genocide against the wounded, besieged, and steadfast Gaza Strip,” Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam posted on X.
