Zimbabwe's cholera epidemic has killed more than 2,000 people since August.

The World Health Organization said that the number of diagnosed cases has now reached almost 40,000.

The new data released by the WHO shows that 117 more deaths have been recorded compared to just a day ago, bringing the total number of victims to 2,024.

A further 1,472 people had fallen ill with cholera, taking the total number to 39,806.

The Zimbabwean capital Harare remains the worst-hit region, with 238 deaths recorded and 10,813 cases, WHO said.

The Beitbridge area, which borders South Africa, has the second largest number of diagnosed cases with some 4,275 people infected, including 21 new cases recorded in the latest report.

The epidemic has spread as a result of Zimbabwe's collapsing infrastructure, including the failure by the government to provide clean water amid corruption and the country's economic crisis.
