Najaf/Ankara: Two bomb blasts in the southern Iraqi city of Samawa yesterday killed at least 33 people and wounded more than 50, security and medical officials said.

“The hospitals have received 33 dead,” a senior official in the Muthanna health department, which covers Samawa, said. “Two car bombs went off in town. The first one was at around midday near a bus station in the city centre,” a senior police officer in Muthanna province said. “The other exploded about five minutes later, 400 metres from the spot of the first explosion,” he said.
Meanwhile in Turkey, a car bomb struck the entrance of a Turkish police station yesterday in the southern city of Gaziantep, killing a policeman and injuring 23 other people, an official said.
Governor Ali Yerlikaya of Gaziantep province, issued a statement saying 19 policemen and four civilians were wounded in the explosion that went off at 9.17 am. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The police station is close to several government offices, including that of the governor and mayor. The area is normally crowded but was empty early Sunday.
