Singer Gloria Estefan says CIA tried to recruit her as a 'spy'

Singer Gloria Estefan has claimed that the CIA once tried to hire her as a spy. The Cuban-born star said she was approached by the US spy agency to become an undercover agent due to her "language skills" when she was working as an interpreter for US Customs at Miami International airport years back.

"They realised I was someone who could pass as regular person without raising any eyebrows. So, the CIA approached me and wanted me to train in their Atlanta HQ," the star, now 52, told the Miami Herald.

Estefan, who is fluent in English, Spanish as well as French, however, was reluctant to take up the job, because her father had worked for the Cuban government as a bodyguard for the then President Fulgencio Batista.

Estefan, a US citizen, has sold over 90 million albums worldwide with hits such as Rhythm Is Gonna Get You and Dr Beat. She also formed a Latin pop group Miami Sound Machine, and runs a chain of Cuban restaurants in Florida as well.
