Islamabad: A media report yesterday suggested that Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to attempt de-escalating the tension with India and launch a dialogue on Kashmir. To that end, Sharif spoke to Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif on telephone on Tuesday night regarding the tensions with India in the wake of the Sunday terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Dawn reported.

“The Prime Minister and the army chief are believed to have discussed proposals the former intends to make during his speech (at the UN General Assembly) for de-escalating the situation and moving to a dialogue on the Kashmir dispute,” it said.

It said the two men discussed the prevailing regional situation. Sharif is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly session.

This was the first conversation between the two since Sunday’s terror attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri that left 18 soldiers dead and pushed India-Pakistan relations to a new low.
