Respect civic amenities, do not smash them

The broken wall at Mumbra Retibunder along the new Kalwa-Diva lines

Just a fortnight after its opening, a concrete wall made around the new Kalwa-Diva lines has been breached by miscreants. In an act of vandalism, this shortcut has been made to facilitate crossing the tracks.

A detailed report cited several dangers after this has happened, with an abandoned factory nearby which can become a hub of illegal activity. There are a number of slums along the lines too. Most importantly though, this means people can cross the tracks, a practice which this edit space has highlighted repeatedly is a death wish.

Already battling to keep slums away from its land, it is deeply disturbing that newly built infra, paid for with tax money, has been smashed like this. Good camera surveillance may have thrown light on who exactly is responsible. Now, we need bold signage about the danger of crossing tracks. Some barricades along the smashed portion may be a temporary help to stop track crossing.

Patrolling will have to increase but these solutions are reactions, which are needed post this criminal act. What we need to stress is the fact that people need to be educated enough to understand that infra is made for your ease and safety. Smashing this wall, damaging other facilities must incur strict action. Detailing the same at these spots should act as some deterrent to people who think they can tear down public property with impunity, for their selfish and foolhardy ends.

The respect for civic amenities has to be ingrained from childhood. It can begin from something as basic as respect for another child’s toys while playing together. By smashing a portion of that wall, these criminals have destroyed what belonged not just to them, but all locals who use this station. Now, temporary measures need to be taken but a sea change in thinking is the only way to stop these appalling acts.
