Remove the rot that perpetrates horse cart races

A grab from the video shows bikers very close to a racing horse-cart

After Gorai police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the perpetrators in an illegal horse cart race held at the beach on February 14, we have to ensure that there is sustained and consistent action to crackdown against the crime and that constant monitoring is in place.

We must ensure that all those involved are rounded up and the investigation is brought to a complete close. It is important that the entire criminal machinery behind the act — the place from where the horses and carts are brought in connivance with locals and bikers and all those involved even peripherally in this cruel practice, are rounded up. This is because it should have no chance to recur.

It also underpins the importance of keeping a constant vigil through local informants or animals rights groups.

We must also ensure that this does not happen on other beaches. There are several beaches where horse carts are used to give joy rides. We must see that copycat races are not being held there. The police cannot be everywhere, but citizens can alert the authorities or post on social media, and once validated and convinced of the credibility of the incident, the cops can swing into action.

It is hard to imagine that this is a one-off, isolated incident so it is imperative to get to the root of the gang operating this and make this an absolute clean up. An incomplete operation means criminals may be emboldened to take this elsewhere, as the won’t be plucked out from the root.
