A section of the cement concrete (CC) main road constructed about six months ago at Aarey Milk Colony has already been dug up for repairs, infuriating locals and motorists. In the past, this paper had highlighted how the stretch had developed cracks, prompting the authorities to ask the contractor to carry out repairs.

Recently when reporters from this paper visited the spot, an approximately 50-foot-long portion of the newly constructed CC road was dug up near Chhota Kashmir lake.
It is unfortunate that despite numerous instances, some infrastructure continues to fall apart months if not weeks after being made. There is understandably a sense of anger and bitterness as taxpayers witness their money being wasted.
This edit space has repeatedly highlighted the need for high standards, as all our public utilities need to stand the test of time. We have used this incident to base an opinion, but this is certainly not an isolated one.
Besides the obvious challenges that crumbling infra poses, there is a mental impact on the citizenry too. They become extremely cynical and the trust deficit between leaders, municipal authorities and people grows. This can only be bad news for the city, as you will tend to have people who question every work, defy any kind of rule or guideline because they have been let down so often in the past.
Having stated that, it is also the responsibility of citizens to treat public amenities with respect and care. Deliberate damage and defacement should result in punitive measures. Let all work be done with a long-term vision, pride and a sense that it needs to meet the demands of a very crowded city and tough scenarios. The upcoming monsoon makes that even more important.
