Maintaining roads should be a year-long endeavour

Potholes being fixed on the Mumbai-Nashik highway near Igatpuri

Motorists travelling via the Mumbai-Nashik highway are facing uneven road surfaces and potholes. Frustrated by the lack of improvement, this is a recurrent problem, motorists vented at the authorities. The highway is a crucial link between Mumbai and Nashik, which sees heavy daily use.

A man who recently travelled from Mumbai to Shahpur via the Mumbai-Nashik highway, complained about hazardous potholes and the uneven road surface, saying he thought this posed a definite danger to two and four-wheelers. Motorists pay toll and they should have good, smooth roads.

Drivers too have to spend additional money on vehicle maintenance. There are tyre punctures, suspension damage, wheel alignment problems, and even damage to the vehicle’s oil tank thanks to the state of the road.

One motorist asked a rhetoric question about why the government collects toll if the road cannot be maintained. It is dangerous to be dismissive and say that potholes are a pervasive problem. This is a high density stretch and a highway, so it should definitely be maintained. While the usual waiting for a dry day to fix the road may be trotted out, we know that there are plenty of dry days between one monsoon and the next. If this is a recurring problem, then, there has to be one solution.

We have seen serious accidents and in extreme cases fatalities too because of problematic road surfaces and potholes. We have evidence of them in the city, and, potholes complaint lines and helplines have sprung up.

Yet, if we have to make potholes a thing of the past attention has to be paid to our long stretches and vital connectors. Extensive work between monsoons, once over just before the rains and regular inspections mid-monsoon have to be done. Drives keep vehicles in top condition, avoid speeding, wrong side overtaking and put safety above all.
