The Mumbai Fire Brigade has served notices to 17 of 68 malls over the past one week after carrying out surprise inspections last month, a civic official said on Monday.

A BMC release said 48 of the 68 malls were found to be following fire safety norms during inspections held between May 26 and 30, while 17 malls have got notices for not adhering to these stipulations. The malls were inspected on BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani’s orders, following the massive fire in TRP Game Zone in Rajkot in neighbouring Gujarat on May 25, which resulted in the death of 28 people. The 17 malls have been issued notices under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Protection Measures Act 2006.

Surprise checks across all institutions are a must if we have to keep those responsible on their toes. At times, we do see that fire equipment has been installed. Yet, it is not in working condition or outdated and obsolete. At times, the equipment may be working but staffers or employees do not know how to use it, rendering it useless.

Exits in malls, etc., may be blocked with some goods just kept there temporarily. That, too, needs to be checked as exits must be clearly marked and kept free. Elevators must have signage about not taking them in case of any fire and staircases must be obstruction free.

All fire audits must be done and up-to-date. Coffee shops, restaurants, entertainment and gaming zones all need equipment specific to their space and most importantly, accessible exit spaces.

With heavy footfalls, malls have become important getaways and entertainment and meeting spaces in the urban landscape. Safety is key.
