Life is a beach for Mahim and Dadar locals, who now have access to a spiffy stretch of sand and sea. The Mahim beach got a R4-crore makeover recently, with local leaders and officials inaugurating the 200m long beach spread, earlier used as a dumping ground, according to reports.

Under the beautification programme, there were artificial sculptures placed on the stretch, a tree plantation drive took off and some garden furniture was installed. There is also an open-air gym and a watch tower built for the public.

Initial reports and pictures paint a pleasant vista, neat, clean and in a while, sure to be very green.

What we now want is consistent upkeep from officials who have to keep a certain number of personnel to look after this stretch. We have to also see that the same standard is maintained after months.

So many projects are started with the best of intent and grand fanfare. Soon though we see problems, falling into disrepair, broken in patches, equipment that is stolen and general air of negligence and ruin. This is true of several open-air gyms and children’s playgrounds. It is as if we are done with the opening and now it is open season, and seems to be alright if it goes to seed.

This is a casual way of taking things and a massive waste of tax payers’ money. It also smacks of getting your two minutes of fame for political party leaders, till photographed at yet another project.

People, too, need to respect the infra and use it with care. It is a two-way responsibility. Those in charge have given you the infra, now use it as if it were apparatus in your very own home.

Vandalism and theft should carry stiff punishment. Enjoy the beach, and, most importantly see that it stays this way for years.
