Dangerous to place aesthetics above safety

It is warped logic that makes us believe that the higher from ground level we reside, the less vulnerable it makes our homes to burglaries.

A report in this paper spoke of a family living in a four-bedroom flat on the sixth floor of a posh building in Bandra, which was saved from being robbed or even possibly physically harmed by a burglar, only because the elderly woman of the house woke up in the middle of the night.

So, how did the robber get in? Through an open window in the dining area of the house, according to the police.

Most upscale families are averse to the idea of window grilles or locks as it comes in the way of the aesthetics of their homes.

The sight of iron or aluminium bars or grilles is never a pretty sight. But, then neither is the sight of a burgled house or a harmed loved one.

It is no secret that criminals can find a loophole in even the tightest security. They could even walk in through the front door, which is why a safety door is the protection of choice for most homes, no matter how unappealing the sight of them can be.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, burglaries still rank high on the list of crimes in Mumbai. Numbers have marginally improved owing to the increased patrolling by the police and the high coverage of CCTV cameras. Yet, like stated earlier, criminals are adept at finding ways around security paraphernalia.

Keeping us safe is not just the police’s responsibility. We, too, need to ensure that we are alert, vigilant and our homes are secured against such eventualities. It would be supercilious of us to place an unhindered view above our own lives.
