As rising COVID numbers raise concern across the board, the question on people’s minds has gone from ‘When will we get the vaccine?’ to ‘Will we have a second lockdown?’ The city, meanwhile, has put its foot on the gas pedal to stop the spread and ensure we do not spiral into another lockdown.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Wednesday got into a train, appealing to people to follow all COVID-19 protocols in public interest.
A report stated that the mayor said that nearly 60 per cent of the people are violating rules like not wearing face-masks, maintaining physical distancing or cleanliness.
Pednekar, reports said, caught a suburban train from Byculla to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and approached commuters who were not wearing face-masks to do so. The Mayor was spotted on footbridges and even at vendors and outside paanwallahs, telling people to maintain Covidiquette.
It is good to see our local leaders and representatives on the ground, rather than emerging from the woodwork only when elections are around the corner, or, when there is some kind of photo opportunity. At the same time, it is a sad commentary and wake up call, that a Mayor has to come on to the roads to urge people to wear masks.
It is disheartening that we need a Mayor to tell us to observe the most fundamental rule, covering one’s mouth and remind us that COVID is still present. Mumbai must prove it is surely more aware, responsible and disciplined than this. The most cosmopolitan of cities needs to demonstrate that it understands and responds accordingly to the virus threat. Having the Mayor admonish and in this case appeal to citizens to wear masks, like a teacher in a class full of little children, is something we certainly cannot be proud of.
