Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

References to the actor Om Puri's rant against politicians clogged timelines for a fair amount of time.

One of his peers, Anupam Kher, tweeted: 'Apart from being an outstanding actor, Om Puri is also a true Indian who echoed the thoughts of millions of us.

I stand by him. Do you?' Nimish Dubey pointed out that 'Talk of filing cases against Om Puri and Kiran Bedi seems to send this message: Go ahead and rob the country, but don't call us names!' Sachleen Kaur wanted to know, 'Will Parliament also plan to punish its own MPs for calling Anna a traitor and corrupt?'

Raja DiggVijay Singh had a question for the actor: 'Dear Om Puri, can any educated or 'layak' outside the Sansad even dream of earning Rs 1,760,000,000,000 in a single sweep?'

And this from Naveen Sharma: 'Om Puri is expressing our thoughts. It's a shame to see all these leaders fighting like schoolchildren in the Lok Sabha.'

Return of the King
If Michael Jackson were around, he would have turned 53 this week. His fans didn't forget though, as was proved by the millions of 'Happy Birthday MJ' tweets that cropped up. Some people like a certain Donnie were more cynical: 'People now wishing happy birthday to a dead person? What's next, throwing a party for him like it's 1999?' And this comment from Katie Weasel: 'Michael Jackson will always be with us; he is not biodegradable.'

Poor reception

'Ways to get off the phone' became a trending topic that yielded excuses including 'I need to feed my goldfish', 'Let me call you back, my phone is dying', 'My mom is calling me', 'I'm about to step into the elevator' and 'My water just broke.'

The last word

From actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar: 'Good news: Mumbai's water-supplying lakes overflow. Bad news: Homes in Mumbai are underwater.'
