Review civilian awards

As in the past, the Padma awards this year were conferred upon some deserving people and a few not so deserving people.

As in the past, the Padma awards this year were conferred upon some deserving people and a few not so deserving people. The government's criterion to short list names for this award appears mysterious and intriguing. Various states recommended their candidates and pressure groups at the Centre also exerted their influence before the final decision was taken. In the process, the deserving individuals who have made valuable contribution to the society are often left out.

This year many Bollywood actors and cricketers were given this recognition. But what sacrifices have they made for the country? For all the entertainment they have provided to the public they receive ample rewards.u00a0

There are only a handful who have contributed to theu00a0 public cause. Awards by the government were considered an adulation of the spirit of democracy. But, over the years the criteria has changed. Today, the privileges have often been misused. The time has come to review civilian awards.
