Readers say changes have to be brought about to solve problems of unemployment and power shortage

Maharashtra is in the grip of unemployment, acute power shortage and unlawful behaviour today. The decade-old rule of the Congress and the NCP is responsible for this.

The state could not add even half a per cent to the power generation capacity during the past 10 years.

Maharashtra has fallen behind in the production of food grains too.

Once the leading state in the country on industrial front, Maharashtra is today ranked seventh. It is unfortunate that leaders, who launch agitations on minor issues, are silent on the serious issues confronting the State.

The Opposition leaders are equally responsible along with the ruling party for this sorry situation. It would not be exaggerating to say that the Democratic Front government has almost destroyed the prospects of a generation.

If the present scenario is to be changed, veterans from all the political parties will have to work determinedly in unison. If not, Maharashtra will have to face the consequences.

Bring in the SEZs
It has been two months since Ashok Chavan took over as chief minister of Maharashtra. During this period, expectations of the industrial sector have increased following his assertion that the Dow Chemical unit will not be allowed to go outside the state.

But Chavan has not taken any step in this regard. According to recent statistics released by the government, a maximum number of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are to come up in Maharashtra. These will generate around 66 lakh jobs. Considering the global recession, if the chief minister gives a boost to the proposed SEZs, they will open up new avenues for employment. These will also bring in prosperity to Maharashtra.

The SEZs can obtain momentum only if decisions are taken before the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is imposed.

It is an appeal from the youth of the state that the chief minister initiate concrete action before the red tape comes into force.
