Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

'To all those who used our competitors' products: Happy Father's Day.' This age-old piece of advertising by the Durex brand of condoms predictably clogged timelines on Father's Day. Not all of it was necessarily good publicity though. Sanjay Devasthale called the advertisement atrocious: 'It's like a repellent ad saying Happy Malaria and Dengue to all who use our competitors' products,' he tweeted. Someone with the handle CrazyBipolarManiac added: 'Funniest thing today. This lady bought Durex condoms and had her kids with her.'

Coke and the 'coin'
Speaking of Father's Day, India's favourite writer ufffd or punching bag, depending on who you speak to ufffd managed to annoy many with this tweet: 'Mothers give birth but, ultimately, the coke belongs to the guy who puts the coin in the vending machine.' Chetan Bhagat allegedly deleted the message, but the damage was done. In Vikas Munipalle's words: 'His jokes are like the ones cracked by that drunk shady uncle at a party in an attempt to fit in with the younger crowd.' A certain Kiran Manral added: 'He has a death wish. Or a very, very tolerant wife.'

Switzerland's envy
'Now is the time to board a bus to Puttaparthi. You may find some bags under the seat.' That comment, from Jyotsna Mendon, came in the wake of news reports that police had recovered at least Rs 5 crore stuffed in two gunny bags from a government-owned Puttaparthi-Bangalore bus. This, a day after a man was held with Rs 35 lakh, also believed to have been spirited out of the place. It prompted Ramesh Srivats to say: 'Swiss Banks must be looking enviously at Puttaparthi.'

The last word
In Pritish Nandy's words: 'Father's Day is not just about your father or mine. It's about every man and how he links two generations, one before him and one after.'
