Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

The IPL yielded an unlikely online celebrity in the form of Gabriella Pasqualotto. What got the pretty 22-year-old South African cheerleader a lot more attention than Dhoni or Tendulkar was her being sent home for secretly blogging about players at post-match parties. According to one besotted fan, this may be why the Mumbai Indians lost their match. For those who haven't read the blog in question, Pasqualotto described Dhoni as polite, Tendulkar as rarely present and Graeme Smith as someone who will flirt with anything.

Google Ice Cream
Google made a lot of people happier than usual for two reasons: Firstly, for its animated doodle commemorating the 117th birthday of influential American dancer Martha Graham. Second, its announcement of the next version of operating system Android, mysteriously yet deliciously named Ice Cream Sandwich. Naturally, and much to the annoyance of all geeks, a significant number of people were prompted to list their favourite flavours.

Teen 'tween
'Teenage Memories' made a comeback, with interesting results. For one person, a peculiar memory was 'learning how to tease someone until they cry.' For another it was 'we met, we talked, we liked, we called, we texted, we dated, we committed, I loved, you cheated, we're done, you're deleted.' The most pertinent comment: 'If you aren't old enough to have teenage memories, get the hell off Twitter.'

Puppy shame
Lastly, two interesting celeb tweets. The first from actor Rahul Khanna: 'Lost an old friend, a master cocktail mixologist. The first thing his wife said when I called was, "Rahul, he left me the margarita recipe!"' The second, from journalist-politician-producer Pritish Nandy: 'Now that the elections are over, petrol prices to rise by Rs 3. How shameless can a government be?' As a former Member of Parliament, if Nandy can't answer that question, how can we?
