Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Subramanian Swamy, president of the Janata Party, former Union minister and professor of economics, managed to annoy a whole lot of people after a column published by him began making the rounds online.

Titled 'How to wipe out Islamic terror,' it contained statements that, at least in one reader's opinion, 'promoted a supremacist, bigoted agenda.'

A tweeter with the handle Rofl Indian urged Swamy to advertise for a brand of noodles, as he was 'good at cooking two minute junk recipes that look mouth watering.'

Jeya Vasanth commented: 'Before speaking about terrorism, Swamy should come out of his mental terrorism of religious and caste hatred.'

And there was this, from Pooja Naik: 'I had great respect for that guy...what happened?'

Alive and kicking
Reports of Ilyas Kashmiri head of Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami and Al Qaeda's 313 Brigade - being alive despite being declared killed in an American drone strike on June 3 made him an unlikely trending topic.

Indian Cartman was compelled to comment: 'Now, I believe even Osama bin Laden is alive and the NASA guys never landed on the moon.'

Devanshu had a suggestion: 'Kashmiri should surrender to India. He will then be put in an 'anda' cell, get biryani everyday and be saved from drones too.'

Andrew Lebovich added: 'I really wish he'd make up his mind or put out a video already.' And this, from Faking News: 'Kashmiri, who is alive, proves that Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a false statement.'

Mad about you
'One way to piss me off' was a topic that yielded responses like 'taking advantage of my kindness,' 'speaking with your mouth full' and, interestingly, 'ignoring my text messages but updating your Twitter account.'

The last word
Wisdom from actress Gul Panag: 'How do you spot the boarding gate for a flight to India? Easy. There is a herd instead of a queue.' True, that.
