The birth anniversary of one of India's most charismatic and prominent leaders, J Jayalalithaa, also known as Amma is marked on February 24. Jayalalithaa was born in 1948 in Melukote, Mysore state (now Karnataka), and her rise from a young actress to a famous political figure has been nothing short of spectacular. On her birth anniversary, here is look into the life of the former Tamil Nadu CM.

Jayalalitha rose to prominence in the film industry before entering politics. Born on February 24, 1948, in Melukote, Mysore State (now Karnataka), she began her acting career at a young age. Her debut came with the film "Vennira Aadai" in 1965, which launched a successful film career. Jayalalitha's on-screen charisma enchanted audiences and earned her the title "Queen of Tamil Cinema."

While she adorned the silver screen, Jayalalitha's intellectual brilliance was sometimes overlooked in public conversation. Few are aware that she succeeded academically, graduating with honors in English Literature from Stella Maris College in Chennai. Her intellectual prowess would eventually become a defining feature of her political career.

Jayalalitha's political path is inextricably linked to her affiliation with M.G. Ramachandran, the flamboyant actor and founder of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). MGR supervised Jayalalitha's political career, and she rose quickly through the ranks of the party. She emerged as his political heir, acquiring the leadership role after his death in 1987.

Jayalalitha's political career was not without hurdles. She was embroiled in disputes, court challenges, and even spent a short time in prison. However, her persistence and will to overcome adversity marked her political career. Jayalalitha's ability to negotiate difficult political terrain cemented her reputation as an effective leader.

As Chief Minister, Jayalalitha oversaw a plethora of welfare and empowerment programs. Her commitment to women's empowerment was obvious in programs such as "Amma Unavagam" (Amma Canteen) and the "Amma Maternity Nutrition Kit" program. These efforts attempted to help the most disenfranchised members of society and demonstrated her dedication to social justice.

Beyond politics, Jayalalitha's legacy lives on via her commitment to public service. Her leadership had a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu, influencing the state's political scene for decades. Her charisma, persistence, and vision for governance continue to inspire both political leaders and civilians.
