The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Monday commuted death sentence of 11 convicts into life imprisonment in connection to the infamous 2002 Godhra riots case. In its ruling, the High Court also said that there was lapse on part of the Gujarat Government and Indian Railways authorities. In 2002, riots were triggered after over 50 people lost their lives when the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was torched at the Godhra Railway Station. In 2011, a Special Investigation Team had convicted 31 people under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. It had acquitted 63. Out of these 31, 11 people were sentenced to death while remaining 20 were sentenced to life imprisonment
