Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is an auspicious festival marked annually to celebrate the meaningful bonds we share with our siblings. The term "Raksha Bandhan" means "the bond of protection" and is observed on a full moon day.


Traditionally, sisters tie Rakhi on their brother's wrists and wish they have a prosperous, happy, and fulfilling life. In return, the brothers promise to protect and love their sisters unconditionally.


Nowadays, brothers have also started tying knots on their sister's hands, and both promise each other protection and love. On this occasion, siblings exchange gifts and their favourite things.


Raksha Bandhan 2023: Rituals

The Raksha Bandhan festival involves several rituals. On this day, the sister performs her brother's aarti and prays for his long life. Then, she ties a Rakhi on his wrist, puts tilak on his forehead, and feeds him sweets. Brothers show their affection by giving their sister a gift or money.

According to Drik Panchang, traditionally, the afternoon is considered the most auspicious time to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. However, if it is not suitable due to Bhadra, the rituals are performed after it is over.

According to Drik Panchang, this year, Raksha Bandhan falls on August 30 (Wednesday). 

As per the Drik Panchang, the precise auspicious time to commemorate Raksha Bandhan is as follows:

Raksha Bandhan Bhadra End Time - 09:01 PM
Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Punchha - 05:30 PM to 06:31 PM
Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Mukha - 06:31 PM to 08:11 PM

Purnima Tithi Begins - 10:58 AM on Aug 30, 2023
Purnima Tithi Ends - 07:05 AM on Aug 31, 2023

As per the Drik Panchang, the best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna which is late afternoon according to Hindu division of the day. If Aparahna time is not available then Pradosh time is also suitable to perform rituals related to Raksha Bandhan.
