India saw a record 4,529 fatalities due to coronavirus in a single day pushing the Covid-19 death toll to 2,83,248, while 2.67 lakh fresh cases were recorded, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.


With a total of 2,67,334 fresh infections, India’s total tally of cases climbed to 2,54,96,330.


Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Centre of diverting attention and said while deaths due to Covid-19 are increasing the vaccines are reducing.


He also shared graphs showing a decline in Covid-19 vaccinations and the rise in daily deaths. “Vaccines are decreasing and Covid-19 deaths are increasing. The central government policy — Divert attention, spread untruth, make noise by hiding facts,” he charged in a tweet in Hindi.

Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav converted his government residence in Patna into a Covid Care Centre. Yadav has set up the centre from his private funds. He said it has all the necessary medical equipment, beds, oxygen and provision for free food.

“I request the state government to convert all the government residence provided to us into Covid-19 care centres, quarantine centres because people are not getting beds, oxygen and other medical facilities at the government hospitals,” he told ANI.

Rajasthan has declared mucormycosis (black fungus), which is primarily affecting people recovering from Covid-19, an epidemic, officials said on Wednesday. Currently, the state has around 100 black fungus patients.

Experts warn of 3rd wave in K'taka

Karnataka may be inviting another wave of Covid-19 in the state by reducing the number of tests from 1.9 lakh daily a month ago to over 93,000 now, warned a member of the state Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee. The state had conducted 97,236 tests on Monday, in sharp contrast to 1.72 lakh tests on April 28 and 1.9 lakh on April 24.

UP govt lying on teachers’ deaths: Oppn

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Samajwadi and Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of lying about the number of deaths of teachers and workers following panchayat polls duty.

A teachers’ body on Tuesday said 1,621 teachers and workers of the Basic Education Department had died of Covid-19 in UP since April and that 90% of them were on panchayat poll duty.  Gandhi called the state government “insensitive”  for denying the number of deaths. “To avoid giving compensation, the ruthless BJP government in UP is now lying,” said Yadav.

Meanwhile, villagers in Mendara, UP, have demanded a probe into the death of over 50 people since April. They are apprehending that the deaths could be due to Covid-19.
